Environmentally Sustainable Events

A bit about sustainable events...

Events and weddings can be hard work to manage at the best of times and sustainability can so easily take a back seat. It does not have to be that way, particularly if you have a company that understands the issues working alongside you.

We have helped to organise and run many sustainable events such as the People In The Park  festival and will be more than happy to help to provide realistic and practical guidance if requested. We promise not to be preachy and will never pass judgement.

There is an increasing amount  of really good advice out there on sustainable events, so we will only concentrate here on what we can offer to make it easier.

Hire equipment where you can.

As a hire company, we would say that but it does make sense. Hiring equipment avoids more 'stuff' from being unnecessarily manufactured. We buy good quality equipment which is designed to last a long time and is worth repairing to extend its life. This is far better than buying cheap equipment which may be used for only one or two occasions and then thrown away.

Temporary Power

We love holding events in remote places where there is no power but this means that you need a temporary power solution and this normally involves using diesel or petrol fuelled generators but here is some guidance:

  • Go with a battery if you can. Have a look at the Instagrid units that we provide. We have found that just one unit can power sound equipment for an audience of 500 for between 4 and 6 hours.  You can link 3 units together if needed! clean and quiet.. how wonderful is that!

  • If you need something bigger, you can get very big batteries mounted on trailers but they tend to be very expensive so you may need to go for a diesel generator. If that is the case, be careful to get a generator that will suit your needs and avoid getting generators that are far too big. The bigger the generator the more it drinks fossil fuels and, from our experience, generators often  run at just 10% of their potential which can be a waste.

  • If unsure.. just contact us and we will be happy to provide easy to understand advice.  Christian, one of our directors, might even go on about the power (6Kw) you can draw from his electric car.

Avoiding single use plastic:

Finding a suitable alternative to single use plastic can be a nightmare. Should it be biodegradable? Are there different types of biodegradable? What about Compostable? Should it be made from recycled substances? What about bamboo as an alternative?

We also work alongside a local Salisbury based company called The Perfect Plastic Glass Hire that hire out lovely high quality reusable plastic glasses. We are happy to provide advice  - just give us a call.

Getting people to the event

When calculating the carbon footprint of an event, how people travel to and from the event is an important consideration. Providing a minibus or coach collecting people from the train station is often a good solution.

Do get in touch and we can provide contact information of good, environmentally conscious local suppliers.
